Race Recap—Manny Flick #5, April 21, 2013
Another big day on the Schuylkill for DBP Crew. #5 in the Manny Flick series was the biggest yet, boasting 587 boats and 86 high school crews—bigger than last year’s Dad Vail Regatta. DBP Crew had ten entries.
Cold and windy weather conditions added to the challenge, with extraordinarily strong cross currents making for very challenging starts.
First up in the heats, the Boys Varsity Double (A. McAvey, Wunsch) placed first in their heat with a blazing 4:57.39, nosing out Penn Charter in a photo finish (0.46 seconds). That time put them tops overall among 13 competitors.
Next, the LTWT Double (Perez, Park) pulled hard for a 5:22.13 but couldn’t catch the competition, 9 boats overall. Bonner grabbed first place with a time of 4:55.37.
The LTWT Four (Malley, Mistretta, Neville and Sadowski; cox: D.Galimi) couldn’t overcome major start difficulties and came 5th in their heat with a time of 4:54.40. Overall against 17 competitors, their time held up and they were 5th of 18. Christian Brothers pulled first place with a time of 4:47.79.
The Varsity 8+ (stroke to bow: Schnaars, Festa, Miles, Beers-Porzio, Mosca, Begonja, Walker, Buda: cox: A. Galimi) raced together as an eight for the first time. They came 4th in their heat with a time of 4:59.44; St Joe’s pulled first place with 4:20.27 in this field of 14 competitors.

Up next, the Frosh Quad (Caltavuturo, Stone, S. Ebert, Giordano) grabbed a 3rd place finish in a field of 8 overall with a time of 4:58.33; by comparison the first place Roman Catholic pulled a 4:54.63.
The JV4+ (Stroke to bow: Ulizko, Faenza, Dwyer, and Muniz; cox: Cleary) had a lot of company in their category, a total of 23 competitors, and pulled hard for a 3rd place finish with a time of 4:52.16. Christian Brothers took first with 4:48.04.
To end the day, the JV Quad (Biby, Hunt, J. Ebert, Getsos) gave us a nailbiter as they were neck and neck with Shipley, which ultimately nosed them out of 3rd by 0.36 of a second. DBP’s time of 4:53.77 compared with first place Roman Catholic’s 4:35.93.
Overall, DBP boats placed first once, second three times and 3rd twice in the most competitive Flick so far this season. Congrats to athletes and coaches!
